WILDLAND FIRE PREVENTION EDUCATION

navigation

WILDLAND FIRE PREVENTION EDUCATION 2005
was a banner year for Wildfire prevention. The Prevention Division worked in collaboration with the Oregon Dept of Forestry, US Forest Service, and fire districts across the county to carry out the programs, projects and events listed below.

In addition, the Clackamas County Fire Prevention Cooperative (CCC) assigned FPO Lasher to serve as the Public Education Group representative to the Clackamas County Wildfire Protection Plan Working Group. This organization met throughout the year, under the direction of the county, and developed the Clackamas County Wildfire Community Protection Plan. (Sandy Fire District modified this plan to create the Sandy Community Wildfire Protection Plan – it is necessary to have this plan to qualify for several grants). In fact, CCC wrote and received a $40,000 grant for public education programs, which will be carried out in 2006.

Other Wildfire Prevention Activities:

  • CERT Wildfire Prevention and Defensible Space Creation class
  • Clackamas County Fair – Wildfire Prevention Display staffed for 4 days
  • Wildfire Protection Plan Meeting at USFS to obtain input regarding: community values, priorities and special hazards
  • American Red Cross – training for volunteers to go door to door to distribute wildfire prevention and defensible landscaping information and to have ‘educational discussions’ with homeowners.
  • Key Messages were developed to present a unified ‘voice’ to the media and public regarding Debris Burning, future plans to develop unified key messages for other wildfire causes.
  • Firewise/Defensible Landscaping - Nursery Displays located at: Damascus Bi-Mart, Alice’s Country Market, 3 Portland Nurseries, Damascus Farm and Garden Supply, Orient Nursery, Boring Square Garden Center, and Sunnyside Nursery

In addition, FPO Lasher is working with law enforcement and the county to develop an evacuation class for CERT members that will enable them to assist when needed.
